Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

New Jersey cemeteries each publish their own regulations governing headstone size, materials, permitted finishes, and base requirements. NJ Gravestone Designs reviews the specific rules of every cemetery before finalizing a design. Common restrictions include maximum above-grade height — typically 24 to 42 inches for upright stones — base dimensions, and approved stone types. Knowing these rules before carving begins saves time and prevents costly revisions.

Foundation Requirements

Upright headstones in New Jersey require a concrete foundation that extends below the frost line — generally 30 to 42 inches depending on the county and the stone's weight. NJ Gravestone Designs handles foundation preparation and installation as part of every project. Our team coordinates the schedule with cemetery staff, prepares the concrete footing, and sets the stone correctly. Families do not need to arrange a separate contractor.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Religious cemeteries across New Jersey — Catholic, Jewish, Orthodox, and Protestant — often carry additional requirements alongside the general cemetery rules. Jewish cemeteries may specify facing direction or limit certain symbols. Catholic grounds may have sections with distinct base requirements. NJ Gravestone Designs has worked in these settings for decades and incorporates any faith-specific specification into the design from the outset.

Headstone Design

Headstone design at NJ Gravestone Designs is a process of collaboration and craft. The first step is understanding the person being memorialized — their story, their faith, their aesthetic preferences, and the family's wishes. From that conversation, our designers develop a scaled proof showing the layout of the inscription, any portrait or decorative element, the shape of the stone, and the surface finish. Families review the proof and request adjustments; the design is not committed to stone until the family has approved it. Contemporary clean-line styles, traditionally shaped uprights, low-profile flat stones, angled slant markers, and sculptural designs are all within our range. Design elements include engraved portraits from photographs, hand-carved floral motifs, religious symbols in granite or bronze, and custom lettering styles. Every design decision is made in conversation with the family. No design is repeated without permission. No catalog template overrides the family's wishes.

Granite Options

American-made granite is the primary material for NJ Gravestone Designs headstone designs. Our inventory includes classic gray granite, polished black granite suited for detailed portrait engravings, warm rose granite, and deep mahogany granite. Each color and finish produces a different visual quality. Polished surfaces reflect light and show inscription crisply. Honed surfaces offer a matte, understated look. Rock-faced edges add textural contrast. Material samples are available at our Morris County showroom, and photographs and descriptions can be shared with families consulting remotely.

Custom Design Process

The custom design process at NJ Gravestone Designs follows a clear sequence, even for complex commissions. The consultation establishes scope and preferences. The design proof translates those preferences into a visual plan. Material selection confirms the granite color, finish, and dimensions within cemetery guidelines. Hand-carving begins once every element is approved. The finished stone is inspected in our workshop before delivery. Installation is managed entirely by our team. This sequence applies equally to a simple single-name upright and to a companion stone with portrait engravings. The process is the same — only the scope varies. Families can stay informed at every step.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

NJ Gravestone Designs's hand-carving process for New Jersey gravestone designs follows six defined steps. The first is consultation: a conversation — at our Morris County showroom or by phone — to understand the family's vision, the memorial's purpose, and the cemetery's requirements. The second is design proofing: our team produces a scaled visual proof showing layout, inscription, symbols, and dimensions. The third is material selection: American-made granite is chosen by color and finish, reviewed against the cemetery's approved materials list. The fourth is hand-carving: craftsmen in our Morris County workshop cut every element by hand, using chisels and techniques refined over 80 years of continuous practice. Lettering, portraits, and decorative motifs are all executed in this way. The fifth step is finishing and inspection: the stone is surface-treated, cleaned, and reviewed by a senior craftsman for quality before leaving the workshop. The sixth is installation: our installation crew coordinates with the cemetery, prepares the concrete foundation, and sets the stone in its final position. Throughout the process, the family has a single point of contact and receives updates at each stage.
